Motherhood & beyond
During delivery the mother expends a great deal of energy and blood. Additionally the body begins the task of producing breast milk. Depending on how long the labor a new mother may be susceptible to a wide range of problems.
In the first few years postpartum I can help alleviate the following conditions:
In the first few months postpartum I am happy to visit you at home. You may consider this if you experienced a long and difficult labor. I recommend that moms have at least two treatments in the first month postpartum. Mother warming, a moxa treatment, can be done by a practitioner or your partner can be trained. After mother warming I suggest an acupuncture treatment with herbal therapy. Please read below for more information.
Regardless of what you labor was like, postpartum tonification or revitalization can help prevent future problems and make the most of the first few months with your new baby.
In many cultures there are traditions of warming the mother in the first 5 to 7 days after childbirth. Hot stones, fires, water bottles, or warm oils are all examples of traditional treatments. In Chinese medicine, moxabustion is the traditional warming treatment. Moxa is a specially dried and prepared herb called mugwort. This is burned above the belly and low back.
Mother warming can aid healing, give relief to any discomfort and help tone the uterus. It can also help the new mother have more energy and feel rejuvenated. It is a great way to gently aid recovery from childbirth and restore energy. The treatment should be given 4 to 5 days postpartum. This is a treatment performed by myself or your partner. You may schedule a home visit or arrange a session prior to delivery to learn how to apply this treatment. Please use my contact form or call at 208-215-2579.
As a follow up to mother warming I recommend a treatment at 10 to 14 days postpartum. Acupuncture, moxa, massage and dietary therapy will facilitate recovery of energy and building of blood.
During this treatment I will interview you in detail regarding the delivery and current symptoms. Based on this you may receive more moxa, acupuncture and/or gentle massage. If you are interested I will return the next day with a congee, based on your symptoms, to help your recovery. Congee is a grain based porridge with added medicinal herbs to speed recovery from child birth.
Mother warming and one additional home treatment make a thoughtful baby shower gift. If you are interested in arranging this for your loved one, contact me online or call 208-215-2579.
